Like the rest of the wold, I”m starting the new year by being active (although trying to avoid the gym until this active motivation dies down). Last month, I signed up to run the New Orleans Half Marathon in February with my friend who is doing the full marathon. Being active isn’t one of my new years resolutions, I decided long ago that this just needs to be a part of my life at all times. Last year, while I was active, my running was not where it had been in previous years, I only ran in one 5k race (Turkey Trot). So this year, I decided to kick off the year by already having a race to train for (50 days left to train!). I’m excited about the upcoming race, especially the post race hurricanes and po’boys!
So far this week, I’ve been running in the cold and I’m sure it’s only going to get colder (hello snow!). I have no specific races that I want to run the rest of the year, but I’m hoping to do at least a couple more half marathons this year.
Here’s hoping the training goes well!
October 11th was the big race day, the Baltimore Half-Marathon. The race was great, scored an awesome Under Armor shirt, and overall had a pleasant experience. I finished with a time of 2:06.
I met Dave on Friday evening so we could go to the Race Expo held at the Ravens stadium. We got our bib numbers, shirts, and other fun goodies. We met up with Wags and her hubby for dinner that night at this really cool tavern, which was almost cruel because they had some delicious beers that Dave and I weren’t able to enjoy, but enjoyed a delicious pre-race meal. Lucky for us the half-marathon didn’t start till 9:45, but we did have to get to the stadium around the start of the marathon in order to find parking. It was nice to have plenty of time to stretch and even catch the finish of the 5k. The half-marathon was mixed with a bunch of other races going on including the marathon and marathon relay. The half was on its own course for the first 3 miles and then we merged with the other races. There were a ton of runners, it was crazy! We lucked out weather wise, it was a very nice day, a little too hot out, but better than being really humid or really cold. Dave’s parents came down too, it was so great to see them out on the course cheering and at the finish.
Mentally, the race kind of kicked my butt, I had a lot of gas left in the tank at the end, I was worried I wouldn’t have enough to finish, but I probably could have pushed myself a bit more. The hills were tough and there were a lot of hills (it seemed), even when people said it was the last one, it never was! It was a great finish, running through Camden Yards, so I may have to do it again next year, to improve my time and score another nice shirt.
